COMPOSERS INFO
Duration of piece: 5-10 minutes
Available Instrumentation: 20 classical guitars, 5 electric guitars, 5 steel string acoustic guitars, one electric bass, one rock style drum set. This is what is available, feel free to compose for any group of instruments within these limits. Involving the entire group is not required of any of the composers. See above list for current roster.
Difficulty: Advanced, beginner parts are optional. We ask that any beginner parts be available in music and TAB. Standard notation is fine for the advanced players.
Conductor: Dr. Robby Gibson
Current composers list: Dr. Matthew Dunne, Mark Anthony Cruz, Ashley Lucero, Matt Bacon, Michael Keplinger, Colton Chapman.
Rehearsals: We’re planning for 4 2+hour rehearsals to take place 7/5, 7/6, 7/7, and 7/8. Hopefully at the Josephine Theatre (I’m meeting with Mr. Thomas Miller this Friday to discuss our venue rental). If the Josephine doesn’t pan out, I will look into using the UTSA downtown campus concert stage as a rehearsal space. I will be giving Robby veto power over any of the pieces in regards to the actual orchestra concert. If the group can’t get the piece together in time, it simply will not be performed at our grand finale orchestra concert.
Performance date/venue: 7/8/22 at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts. Exact time TBA. Depending on the actual size of the orchestra group the performance will take place at either the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theatre or the HEB performance hall. The concert will be free and open to the public.
The Theme: The board and I have chosen “Tribute to the Municipal Auditorium” as the theme for our orchestra concert since the concert will take place at the Tobin Center/remodeled Municipal. So far the other composers have been using the concert archives list of past Muicipal concerts to take inspiration for their orchestra pieces. Great artists including Elvis, Johnny Cash, Ella Fitzgerald, Yes, Nugent, Ronstadt, The Beach Boys, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Sabbath, and so many others played the venue from the 1920s until it’s demolition in the 2000s. It was truly a historic venue, and definitely worthy of a musical tribute. Feel free to pay tribute to the hallowed Municipal stage in any way you see fit.
