The Aranjuez Outreach Series


After a year-long search of the U.S. and around the world, Jake Ramirez, M.M., President & Founder of Guitar San Antonio, has selected 20 up-and-coming guitar concert artists representing the most prestigious music conservatories and universities around the world to participate in the inaugural season of the Aranjuez Outreach Series in San Antonio, TX. These award winning concert artists are alumni or current students of The Juilliard School, Eastman School of Music, London’s Royal College of Music, Johns Hopkins Peabody Institute, San Francisco Conservatory, Yale School of Music, UT-Austin, Florida State University, Columbia University, University of Southern California, University of North Texas, and many others.

THE MISSION


It is Guitar San Antonio’s mission to present performances of Joaquin Rodrigo’s Adagio from Concierto de Aranjuez in every middle school and high school in San Antonio, featuring up-and-coming guitar concert artists not exceeding the age of 30 from the U.S. and around the world, in an effort to promote the inclusion of guitar classes in schools in San Antonio, and to expose the diverse student population of San Antonio to the guitar’s rich repertoire.

THE AWARD


-Upon selection, each guitarist will be awarded a 5-day residency in San Antonio, TX as an “Aranjuez Outreach Artist” for Guitar San Antonio. Each artist will perform the duties listed below. Guitar San Antonio (Guitar SA) will select up to 4 guitarists to share the duties required during each 5-day residency.


ARTIST DUTIES


-Each artist will all give at least 1 performance of Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez Adagio with orchestra, or other suitable accompaniment, at a middle school or high school assembly or evening concert.


Format: Adagio, 10 minutes of solo repertoire, a short interview with President & Founder Jake Ramirez and the artist, followed by a presentation by Jake Ramirez regarding the need for guitar classes in the middle schools and high schools of San Antonio and the surrounding area.


-No more than 4 outreach assemblies will be required of any Aranjuez Outreach Artist. The number of Aranjuez outreach assemblies will vary based on the age and experience of each artist.


-In addition, each artist will perform outreach concerts and teach master classes at the various educational institutions in San Antonio with guitar programs. Guitar San Antonio has formed partnerships with The University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State University-San Marcos, San Antonio College, Northwest Vista Community College, San Antonio Music Academy, and others, to present outreach concerts and master classes in schools with guitar students at the beginning to university level. The number of outreach concerts and master classes given will vary based on the age and experience of each artist.


-Each artist will teach no more than 4 master classes and give no more than 4 outreach concerts during their residency. Each artist must have at least 45 minutes of solo repertoire prepared for the outreach concerts.


-Each artist will be prepared to teach and perform with 2 or 3 cameramen present, taking photos and footage for the documentaries. Guitar SA will never film an entire concert, in order to always present an enjoyable concert experience to the audience.


-Each artist will record one 5-10 minute video lesson on a guitar related topic of their choice for Guitar San Antonio’s "Guitar SA Artist Lessons" series of teaching videos, produced by SAMA and Bueno Studios.
